Annabel and Simon’s sophisticated Kelham Island Museum wedding, abundant with winter wedding flowers.
A Sheffield Wedding Venues special.
Hello all, I’m super happy to bring you the story of Annabel and Simon’s just beautiful winter wedding flowers for their gorgeous, super sophisticated Kelham Island Museum celebration, one of our favourite Sheffield Wedding Venues.
Our first meet
I met Annabel and Simon one chilly Autumn weekend and we talked through the couple’s palette of winter whites, with a soft accent of delicate blush colours for their winter wedding flowers. Foliage and greenery are a real favourite of Annabel’s and seasonal, scented eucalyptus was especially important.
The brief
In a follow-up meeting, we talked in detail about the space at their Kelham Island Museum venue, which is vast! Annabel was particularly keen to fill her chosen Sheffield wedding venue with lots of winter wedding flowers, foliage and twinkly lights to soften the lines and create a warm, cosy, intimate space.
Everyone agreed that the floral installations should be soft, wild and unstructured, which would fit perfectly with the look and feel and is Annabel’s absolute favourite design style too.
Winter wedding flowers
I felt given the space, it was important to create a real statement with the designs and use as many seasonal, but opulent and striking winter wedding flowers as possible. I managed to source gorgeous British grown eucalyptus, senecio, and other foliage which was incredibly fresh and smelled divine. Florals featured blowsy hydrangea, dahlia, roses, lisianthus, hypericum, and much, much more.
Ceremony Wedding Flowers
During the site visit to Kelham Island Museum, it was clear that the ceremony wedding flowers needed to shine through and focus on the couple as they said their vows. As Annabel & Simon had decided to have a large fabric screen in place to separate the ceremony and reception areas, I suggested we design a floral installation in the shape of a large-scale arch to frame the couple at the end of the aisle.
As the aisle and walk into the venue was a long one, we created garlands of greenery along the entrance to welcome the bridal party, along with tall stands of flowers placed intermittently along the entrance too. The aisle itself was decorated with copper pots of winter wedding flowers tied to the ends of the chairs, all of which were re-purposed later.
We also softened a long expanse of partitioning at Kelham Island Museum with cargo nets of twinkly lights, interwoven with stems of scented eucalyptus.
The whole effect was dreamy!
Top table wedding flowers
So this Sheffield wedding venue is really remarkable. Steeped in history, packed with original industrial features, it’s a wonderful, cool space. But it is undeniably a vast space, so as always with roomier venues, my tip for urban wedding flowers is to go big and bold. Make a statement.
We did just that for Annabel & Simon, in the form of a beautiful installation of top-table wedding flowers that framed the couple with an abundance of blooms. They both sat beneath an uber-romantic bower filled with flowers and foliage. It was my favourite design for the whole day, it looked wonderful when we stood back and finished!
Kelham Island Museum
So my thoughts on creating winter wedding flowers for a Sheffield wedding venue such as Kelham Island Museum?
I’d say it’s all about scale and proportion. If you’re having a winter wedding and you want to create warmth in a large, open space then soft blooms and scented greenery, along with lots of low-level light and considered styling are a good place to start.
I do hope this post has given you lots of food for thought. And, if you’re looking for a bag full of inspiration for wedding flowers by month, then pop to our portfolio or check out my recent blog posts on a dazzling two-day summer wedding or, the coolest of Autumn barn weddings. Enjoy, Tx
